1. Start with the result you want
Explain the problem in your own words: branches close to the house, a tree you want removed, a stump you want to build around or a larger area you want cleared. Include anything you want retained.
2. Show the whole setting
If you can do so safely, take a photo of the whole tree, another showing nearby structures, and one of the access route. Send your enquiry first, then email photos with your reference number. Do not climb, approach a damaged tree or enter an unsafe area to take photos.
3. Include the access details
Mention narrow gates, steps, slopes, driveways, parking limits and neighbouring structures. If you know a gate width or another useful measurement, add it. Estimates are fine for the first enquiry; make clear they are estimates.
4. Check the approval position
Before work starts, check whether vegetation protection or other conditions apply. Share any approval, report or advice already obtained. The relevant local authority can explain the current requirements for the property.
Brisbane City Council vegetation guidance5. Ask what the quote includes
Confirm the trees or branches covered, how material will be handled, whether stump work is included, the expected finish and any exclusions. If you want timber or mulch kept on site, say so before the scope is agreed.
6. Compare the scope as well as the price
Different prices can reflect different work. Compare like for like, including material removal, stump work, access arrangements and any assumptions. Ask about qualifications and current insurance relevant to your job, and request supporting information where needed.
